Isn't that just political-correctness
I got myself into a real fervour about the flipant nature of the "Gardners' Question Time" contribution to getting people excited about what plants they can grown when our climate warms up. When our climate warms up!
Naturally I wanted to shout about it on the Griinu Blog. Just as I started, I caught myself though. I'm turning into (already?) an eco-correct whinger.
Eco-Correctness
An avid radio-listener, another show caught my attention last week. I forget the show but the scene involved a single-mother struggling with shopping which is in plastic bags and not organic etc. She commented on how she felt the community frowning on her because of course she wasn't being 'eco' enough. This form of eco-correctness, akin to political-correctness, surely is damaging. Or is it the successful result of the introduction of a new social taboo - harming the environment?
Back to Gardners' Question Time
They just seemed to be embracing climate change, firstly as if inevitable and secondly as if a relief after years of cold! The naivete of ignoring the global picture is astonishing. How can we celebrate being able to grow olives in Manchester when the same fact would mean that Italians will be living in a desert, not even to mention people living in and around the Sahara.
Where am I?
Am I being eco-correct when I bemoan the flipancy of Gardners' Question Time? I think that in this case it's a genuine concern. Are the frowning neighbours being eco-correct with respect to their struggling neighbour? Perhaps. The true eco-gent would help the single mother with her shopping, offering to share a journey to the supermarket or pick up her shopping as a favour.
Sustainably-correct
Therein lies the challenge with our 21st century ambitions. We cannot go it alone and we must help each other - social and environmental considerations go hand-in-hand.
