Luxury
Bamboo clothing offers a new level of luxury and comfort, in a sustainable and ethical way. Bamboo fabric is incredibly soft, smooth and luxuriously comfortable. Bamboo is being called 'The New Cotton' and people are talking about 'A Textile Revolution'.
Sustainable
Bamboo is the most sustainable all-natural plant fibre on earth with amazing softness. It is organic, eco-friendly, anti-bacterial, UV-resistant, non-allergenic, thermo-regulating, deodorizing, more absorbent than cotton, and luxuriously silky soft!
Organic
Bamboo grows and thrives without fertilizers, pesticides or any chemical assistance. This is partly down to an antibacterial substance it contains called 'bamboo-kun'. Compare this property to cotton which uses approximately 25% of the world's fertilizers and insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides for only 10% of the agricultural land mass. Cotton crop pesticides are also the greatest crop contributor to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which contribute to low level ozone and smog formation, increasing the green house effect. These chemicals are also documented as causing death and loss of reproductive ability in fish and wildlife.
Biodegradable
Bamboo clothing and bamboo fabric are completely biodegradable, unlike synthetic textile fibres. Synthetic textile fibers are also made from non-renewable petroleum and can even emit harmful gasses when incinerated. Almost all polyester/cotton blend fabrics are finished with formaldehyde, a carcinogen, added to make fabrics wrinkle or flame resistant. Bamboo Baby's bamboo has no such chemical applications. As no chemicals are used in the growing and processing of the fabric, it is naturally organic and does not irritate sensitive or allergic skin, making it perfect for babies!
Global Warming
Bamboo generates more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees - if we planted more bamboo more photosynthesis would help to cut the globally rising levels of carbon dioxide. Bamboo takes in nearly 5 times the amount of greenhouse gasses, and produces 35% more oxygen, than an equivalent stand of trees, making it an efficient replenisher of fresh air.
Production
To make fabric from bamboo, the fast growing Moso variety - which grows in parts of Asia, primarily in China - is harvested while young and finely shredded. Cellulose is extracted and the remaining fibre is dissolved into viscose before being spun into fibres.
Fast Growth
Bamboo is arguably one of the world's best sustainable resources. Bamboo is actually not a wood but a grass - easy to grow and with a growth rate of up to a meter or more per day, bamboo holds the world record as the fastest growing plant, growing one third faster than the fastest tree! The plant can reach full maturity within 70 days and once harvested, new shoots propagate immediately without a need for replanting. As such, Moso bamboo is potentially a wonder crop that could provide long-term means of living to poor farmers in some of the world's most underdeveloped nations. Bamboo can be utilized in just 4-5 years unlike traditional hardwoods that not only take 25-70 years to mature, but also require replanting.
Absorbent
Bamboo fabric is ultra absorbent, absorbing water 60% better than cotton and drying 20% quicker. A great fabric for nappies! It is hypoallergenic and thermo-regulating, wicking sweat away from the body, which then evaporates leaving the wearer dry and comfortable. The fabric does not retain odours.
Antibacterial
Bamboo clothing has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties due to a substance called 'bamboo-kun'. This property means the fabric stays fresher for longer, and is more healthy and hygienic. Studies by The Japan Textile Inspection Association have shown that even after 50 washes, the fabric still retains its antibacterial properties.
This has two benefits:
1. The fabric has antibacterial properties that resist the bacteria that cause body odour and fabric degradation
2. Growing requires no chemical assistance. According to the World Wildlife Federation, the carcinogenic and eco-unfriendly agrochemicals used in large-scale cotton production have compromised habitats and have been associated with biodiversity loss in the tropical and subtropical regions where cotton is grown. Wool production is equally damaging, requiring toxic pesticide use on grazing fields as well as anti-parasitic chemicals fed to sheep.
Breathable
Bamboo fabric and bamboo clothing products do not stick to the skin and unlike any other fabric in the world, in hot weather it feels physically cooler to touch. Studies show it keeps the wearer up to 2 degrees cooler. Due to the porous nature of the fabric, it traps air to keep the wearer warmer in cold weather. Bamboo fibre is more breathable, comfortable and thermal regulating than cotton, wool or any other synthetic fiber thereby keeping you cooler, drier and more comfortable all day.
Hypoallergenic &, UV Protection
Bamboo clothing is hypoallergenic. Bamboo's organic and natural properties make it non-irritating to the skin making it a pleasant alternative for anyone with skin sensitivities or other allergies and dermatitis. Bamboo clothing also protects you from UV rays, naturally.
Panda friendly
There are over 1200 species of bamboo on this planet. Our clothing is manufactured from Moso bamboo, which is not the species eaten by Pandas.
