Rectangular brass pendant, hanging on a brass chain. Drops 52.2cm. Designed by Pippa Small and made by Aman.
Made by a small organisation, based in Kibera, Nairobi, which offers orphans and other disadvantaged youths the opportunity to learn jewellery making skills using recycled bone beads and other local materials.
Aman - kibera project
Aman is from the Luo tribe, near Lake Victoria. Having tried and failed to relocate to Nairobi Aman ended up living in Kibera, the largest inner-city slum in Africa, possibly the world.
Despite Kibera's lack of sanitation, electricity and drinking water, plus its high rate of HIV/AIDS and Malaria, Aman managed to succeed in the face of adversity. By using recycled materials (including hand-turned cow bone from cattle carcasses used for food), Aman and his team created a small business producing wood carvings, metalwork and beads.
When made first met Aman he employed just four co-workers. Based on the volume of business provided by made he now has fifteen full-time workers, including orphans and disadvantaged youths, and is an integral part of our company.
But more than that Aman and his co-workers are now paid a fair wage, enjoy better working conditions and own proper machinery, tools and safety equipment. As made's relationship with Aman continues, we hope to provide new premises outside Kibera and maintain a long-lasting partnership with this innovative artisan.
