To make beautiful clothes with ethical origins and to illustrate that environmentally and socially responsible fashion can equate to exquisite design and quality.
The philosophy at Amana is to create clothes that marry beautiful design with ethical production practices.
They source suppliers whose mission is to create fabrics that have minimal negative impact on the environment. The result is a collection of garments hand made from beautiful organic cottons, sumptuous hemp and silk mixes, chunky hemp cord and luxurious hemp denim.
All Amana's garments are made by women artisans in Ain Leuh, an enchanting village perched high in the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. They work on a fair-trade basis with their artisans, developing long-term partnerships with them. Amana ensure good working conditions, make advance payments and provide technical assistance and training.
Amana aspire to present you with a collection that is not only desirable for the beauty of each piece but that doesn't come at a cost. A collection where you can trust that from the cotton farmer to the finishing stitches every effort has been made to respect the people involved and protect our precious eco-system. Their supply chain re-iterates the soul of Amana: literally 'delivered in trust' in Moroccan Arabic.
Amana Credentials
Eco Policy
Fabrics
Amana aim to bring you the most beautiful sustainable fabrics available.
Organic Cotton
All Amana organic cotton is certified by Skal, a Dutch organic certification body. Not only does this certify that no pesticides and fertilisers have been used it also guarantees the working conditions of farmers.
Hemp
Hemp is an extremely eco-friendly fabric, it naturally needs little or no pesticides or fertilisers to grow, uses much less water than cotton and produces three times as much fibre.
Silk
In this collection they have used a hemp fabric which is blended with silk. Although not everyone feels comfortable wearing silk Amana decided to use this fabric because of its other ethical qualities, it carries the SBV mark (Sustainable Biodegradable Product) as it is 100% biodegradable and is finished in accordance with SKAL criteria.
New Fabrics
Amana are currently working with tencel, flax, bamboo, recycled fabrics, organic and wild silks and organic wool for their upcoming collections.
Dyes
All their fabrics are dyed with azo free dyes (without the use of toxic chemicals) or with natural dyes.
Carbon Offsetting
The very nature of fair-trade means working with artisans in developing countries, but this means they have to transport Amana's garments from Morocco to the UK. Amana offset the carbon emissions from the transportation of their garments and their flights to and from Morocco by donating to projects in developing countries that reduce carbon emissions.
Social Policy
Amana do their best to ensure they only work with fabric suppliers that also guarantee safe working conditions and living wages for their employees.
Amana would love to use fair-trade cotton but at the moment there is a shortage and it is extremely difficult to get hold of. As a small company they are currently unable to meet the minimum order quantities. However the SKAL certification of their organic cotton guarantees the working conditions of farmers. Amana work directly with women artisans in the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco to make their garments. They voluntarily work with them according to IFAT (International Fair Trade Association) guidelines (they hope to join them officially when they have been trading for two years). Amana pay them three times the minimum wage, make advance payments, help them with training and assist them in acquiring more machinery and technology to grow their business.
