Cacao is the seed in a fruit of an Amazonian Tree, historically used by Aztecs and Mayans as a form of currency. It is a very complex foodstuff and contains over 300 chemically identifiable compounds. Cacao nibs are peeled, raw cacao beans, from which chocolate is made. Cacao beans are one of nature's superfoods with many amazing properties, many of which are destroyed by cooking. They contain no sugar, but between 12-50% fat - depending upon variety, and subtle amounts of caffeine and thoebromine.
Rich in Magnesium, cacao supports the heart, brain and the building of strong bones, it is associated with happiness.
Cacao is super rich in flavanol antioxidants - 10 gms per 100 gms. Research shows that the anti-oxidants in cacao are highly stable and easily available to human metabolism.
Theobromine makes up 1-2% of the bean. This stimulates the central nervous system, relaxes smooth muscles and dilates blood vessels. Theobromine is a mild diuretic and has been known to support the heart after an attack caused by accumulation of body fluid. It is a cardiac stimulant and has also been used to treat high blood pressure.
Cacao's PEA (phenylethlamine) content - up to 2.2% - increases neurotransmitters in parts of the brain that control our ability to pay attention and stay alert. PEA is noticeably abundant in the brains of happy people and is also said to keep us younger longer.
Rare MAO inhibitors (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) in cacao allow more neurotransmitters: serotonin, anandamine and dopamine to circulate in the brain. This facilitates youth and rejuvenation in the form of creativity, joy and flexibility - physical and mental.
Associated with happiness, Cacao's unique combination of chemicals alleviate depression and are associated with feelings of well-being. It has been called nature's prozac for its anti-depressant properties.
Dogs should not be given cacao or chocolate as they lack appropriate enzymes necessary to metabolize quantities of theobromine in excess of 100 - 150 mg per kilogram of the dogs body weight.
