SCIENTIFIC STUDIES
Seawater has been shown to significantly inhibit the increase in trans-epidermal water loss. This effect may be attributed to skin barrier preservation by Sodium Chloride and Potassium Chloride and an emollient effect by Sodium Chloride.
During this study dermatologists at the University of California used seawater to treat dermatitis caused by Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (A common component in wipes, soap products and shampoos.) Within a few days of birth babies form an 'acid mantle' whereby their skin is protected by a drop in pH to around 4.95.
It is important to avoid damage to this skin barrier by the indiscriminate use of wipes, creams and bath products etc.
