SheaByNature is a small Sussex-based Fairtrade company specialising in making natural, organic and community traded products based on unrefined Shea Butter. All their products contain unrefined Shea Butter in varying degrees, from 100% to a minimum of 10%. They work very closely with 2 main groups of co-ops in Ghana in West Africa.
Fair-trade
SheaByNature source their products from a co-operative of producers in the northern region of Ghana in West Africa. 80% of their members are women. They are also developing relationships with a group of women's co-op in the north of Nigeria. Their members include both larger producers as well as small family groups. SheaByNature pay them a fair price which is above the local market price for their products and also aim to buy from the same groups of producers on a regular basis. This helps to maintain their livelihood and also helps them to bring up and educate their children. SheaByNature are currently planning other development activities.
African Black Soap - What is it?
African Black soap is handmade using ancient African traditional methods passed down from generations to
generations. SheaByNature Black soap is made using 50% unrefined Shea Butter, coconut and palm kernel oils. The oils are saponified using the ashes from cocoa, Shea tree, Plantain leaves and Agow tree. The result is a natural, wonderful mild soap with an earthy, nutty fragrance, free from chemicals. It is ideal for the whole family as body, hair and hand wash and is available in solid bar and liquid form, unscented or scented with essential oils.
Variations:
African Black soap varies widely from one region to the other. Each region has their own unique recipe passed down from their ancestors. The oils used as well as the ashes used depend on what is available in each region. The most common oils used in black soap production are Shea Butter, Palm Kernel oil, Palm oil, and Coconut oil in varying proportions. SheaByNature Black soap is made from unrefined Shea Butter, Palm kernel oil and Coconut oil.
Shea Butter -What is it?
Shea Butter comes from the Karite tree (women's gold) which grows only in the savannah regions of Africa.
Shea Butter's emollient properties have been proven through centuries of use in Africa and recent clinical
trials. It is traditionally used to nourish the skin, to keep it supple and young. It is also used to treat a variety
of skin conditions such as eczema, irritations, extreme dryness, stretchmark and wrinkle prevention, burns,
cuts and small skin wounds, after suncare, insect bite, in marriage ceremonies and many more. SheaByNature use only unrefined Shea Butter in all their products.
